Power sliding door on my 2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette minivan closes on its own. It takes a great deal of effort to stop it when it does this. No injuries yet but it concerns me especially when non-family members get in/out as they do not look out for it as the family does.

Have had various problems with passenger automatic sliding door. Has been in shop 4 or more times for door alone. Problems have included door not wanting to close all of the way, closing and reopening constantly for minutes at a time, and door closing on people. If anything obstructs power sliding door while it is closing it is suppose to automatically reverse to open position. On many occasions it will continue to close on a grown adult. Transmission has many problems with it. Our transmission has been replaced yet problems still occuring. The various problems are not consistent. Sometimes I can drive the van and it seems fine while at other times it acts up alot. Sometimes going between reverse and drive it hesitates then shifts hard. Sometimes while taking off from stop it is slow to change gears and then shifts hard. At times it whines and acts sluggish while driving at a constant speed. After putting van into park van would roll at times atleast a foot, even on flat, level surfaces. This also happens on hills, I am not sure if this is normal for a hill but I was sure that it could not be for level ground. On one paticular occasion after pulling out from a stop sign the van could not pick up speed, the van was whinning as if it could not change into the next gear. After pulling over and starting again it gained speed but shifited hard.

My 4 year old son was standing inside the van, facing the powered door, waiting for me to open the door. I pulled the handle and the power door started to open (sliding to my left). When the door reached the midway point my son slipped from the edge and fell with both feet between the door and the door frame. The door continued to travel toward my left, my hand was still on the door handle. I pulled the handle with much force, enough to cause the entire van to jerk forward (I am a 37 year old man). The door would not stop moving. I quickly pulled my son out at the last second. He hugged me and I could see the fear in his eyes. With my son removed I repeated the action and found that at least 50% of the time the door would not stop travel when I pulled on the handle. I reported this defect in engineering to Oldsmobile, report # 000014933. I also notified almo corporate headquarters. It is good, for everyone involved, that my son was not hurt. Please look into this matter. I don't want someone to be injured because not enough safety devices are installed in these doors. Note, when the door has traveled half-way your left are is extended about 45 degrees away from the center of your body. This prevents the door handle from pulling straight out. P.S. I haven't received a reply from almo or Oldsmobile. Please call me if more information is needed. Thank you.
