While driving at night the head lights intermittently went from bright to dim. When using the heater fan it would go from high to low or from low to high. Consumer said that this condition had occurred several times during cold weather. Alternator was redesigned but didn't correct the condition being experienced by consumer.

Purchased my intrique in October of 1999, at that time I noticed in the evening while drive the outside lights would brighten and dim extensively, where to the fact oncoming drivers would flash their bright lights in my eyes causing me hard time viewing the road, can you imagine what they thought when my lights were doing this to them, and who knows how gright the beam was in their eyes, because it seems as a power surge going on. With no controlof mine. I also notice the blower while on defrost has the same type of surging going on and thats when the lights go with a mind of their own. I brought it back to the dealer they replace my altenator, seemed to help for a while. Now, each year when the weather gets cold and you need the heater on high, for defrost mode the lights and blower will do this again, I have no warrenty left on my vehicle, I have notice just this past week that the low coolant light stays on for longer period of time my engine seeems to be starting harder, but as the car warms up things seem to be better not fine, but better. I am a single person now, I bought a new car so I was safe on the road. I have parents who are physically diabled no and rely on me for various reasons, and that includes using my newer car. I work in a piston plant that makes many GM pistons, so I know how particular car companys, feel about what goes on inside these engines, and I know the effects if we happen to fail to do our quatlity job. So why, what does it have to take before, this problem with the lighting and electricall complaints of this vehicles engine, before some one dies due to the bright lights in the oncoming traffic or with the car aging and who knows what else this could be doing to that computer, with the power surges, before on of us owners loose all power and plows in to a tree, another car, we have no right to go out and kill people in this country, our cars are to to be driven, no at weapon ion the road, with a disaster waiting to happen.

Lights dimming and flickering, started at 7,000 miles. Repaired windshield wiper arm which was disengaged from wiper transmission @ 29,318 miles. Lights went totally off at night and check engine light came on @ 40,269 miles. Dealer changed. Alternator and mass air flow sensor. Dealer said to use ac air filter instead of fram air filter. Wiper arm broke again @ 43,349 miles, dealer replaced wiper transmission. Check engine light @ 63,455 miles. Dtc (diagnostic trouble code) indicates (maf) mass air flow sensor. Code was cleared and then came back on @ 64,355 miles. Same maf code. When this happens the car will hicup, lights go out and engine stalls for a fraction of a second. This last time the dtc indicated the car was traveling at 62 mph. In addition, the front tire wore to the cord in 38,000 miles. Rear left tire with inside tire wear in 10,000 miles. Discussed problems with factory rep with no results. Car appears to be a safty problem.

Bought car Oct 2000 as a used auto. Immediately had problems with it. Has been in shop for each of these 4-5 times at least. It has a vibration in the steering system. Midshaft was replaced, but it returned. Olds did say they would attempt to fix this. Ordered a new intermediate shaft, but they could not find what was actually causing this problem. Been also in shop for lights flickering, heater surging, temp gauge running hot. Alternator was replaced after a 3 week stay at the dealer. This problem returned 3 days before midshaft was to be replaced the 2nd time. Called dealership that was going to replace shaft, and decided to hold off until we could settle this with olds. Olds is not trying to rectify easily. I am reporting this to better business bureau at this time.

The major complaint I have with this automobile is the electrical system. The lights constantly flare and flicker as if they are shorting out. GM has claimed that there was a problem with the alternator and after a substantial wait for a remedy that being a redisigned alternator GM still has not fixed the problem. The lights have flickered on and off since the auto was purchased. The mechanics at my dealership have tried but failed to find the problem. The alternator has been replaced twice one by the dealer in desperation and again when the newly redesigned from GM arrived after nearly 6 months from the original promise of a fix came in.my greatest fear is that the computer in this car will fail with all the power surges being put through the electrical sytem. In my opinion this has manifested itself already with the need to reprogram the computer in this car. As this auto was purchased new I would have thought I was purchasing a vehicle free from defects. I hope that this vehicle doesn't turn into a money pit. Thank goodness these problems began while under warranty hopefully GM will continue to honor the warranty after it expires.
