Blower for the A/C unit only worked on speeds 4 and 5 when I purchased the car in 2014 at 78,000 miles. I did not realize this until after I had been driving the car for a few days, it was quite inconvenient, but the car was still safe to drive as it was. I looked up the issue and it seemed that it was quite common for the blower motor resistor to malfunction on the Alero and similar GM cars.
I purchased a new resistor online for $17 and replaced it myself. It took me about 2 hours, mostly because I had no idea what I was doing. The resistor is underneath the passenger side dash behind the blower motor. The job involved disconnecting the battery, removing the plastic panel, the BCM (body control module?), the the blower motor, and then the old resistor. Replacing the resistor was the toughest part because it is right next to the firewall and there is next to no clearance to remove the screws. The new resistor plugged right in and then I put everything back together. The blower motor now works on all speeds and is still working one year later.
