CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005-2007 Xterra appears to have a widespread defect where coolant leaks into the transmission, causing transmission failure around 90,000 miles. Repair costs are typically upwards of $3,500.

The same defect exists in the Pathfinder & Frontier as well. And according to the New York Times & a class action lawsuit, the defect actually extends through 2010 model year. More info here.

Coolant leaked from the radiator into the transmission. This caused an unexpected and with almost no warning, the complete failure of the transmission.

At the location of the highway that I was traveling, there is no place to stop or pull over to inspect the cause of the check engine light. Even if I was able to stop and return home, the transmission was already destroyed.

Transmission started to jerk while in low rpms/4th gear while accelerating (sounded like you're driving over the rumble strip on the highway) thought it might have been a bad u joint. But after doing research I've come to find out it is the bad design of the coolant mixing with the transmission fluid radiator problem. Nissan should just do a recall instead of paying only $800 and having the owner forced to pay $2500. they have solved the problem in the third generation Xterras, so there is a solution to this problem. Nissan needs to do a recall not a crappy extended warranty... But don't get me wrong I am grateful for any kind of help, thankfully mine is only at 82,xxx miles so I only have to pay is 2500 (which is still a lot/had to take out a personal loan because I don't have that kind of money laying around) Nissan please do a recall!!

Had radiator flushed. Noticed some gray sludge in overflow tank. Took a 1000 mile trip. Daughter used car for an errand and saw purple stuff leaking on the ground. Tracked leak down to radiator or transmission cooler. Haven't had it to mechanic yet.

I had brought the Xterra to the mechanic for intermittent vibrations over 2 month and a thumping noise heard in the last 2 weeks. NOTHING came up on the computer system showing any issues other than the known alert for the gas level part that sh*t the bed 6 months ago and I refuse to pay $400 for a $40 that should have lasted the lifetime of the vehicle, (another issue Nissan is aware of as it comes up on the computer to the mechanic that this a known defect but won't replace it free of charge)

End result, transmission fluid and radiator fluid were mixing due to a KNOWN issue by Nissan and defective parts. There is NO RECALL. The radiator and transmission cooler needed to be replaced costing over $1600. I have read on complaint websites regarding this known issue and I am aware this cost is much less than what other Nissan owners have paid as some customers have needed to replace their transmissions or have needed to junk their vehicles as NISSAN REFUSES to take responsibility and suck of the cost to fix this significant mechanical problem on their vehicles!!!!!

Over heated about one month after purchasing from a dealership. Took It in. Mechanics couldn't find anything besides a possible loose cap. Got it replaced. Over heated again about two months later, took it into another mechanic, they said it looked like oil in the antifreeze. Almost like clockwork, here I am again, two months later.

Searched Nissan problems. Exactly the same as described. Took it in, described the issue, transmission fluid mixing with antifreeze. Looking at replacing the radiator, possible transmission! I have 119,000 miles. still owe $8,000 for the car. looking at $3,500 repair. Really upset.

I purchased a Nissan because I wanted reliability. So far it has left me stranded 3xs, bought it six months ago. :(

Already had to replace front wheel bearings at 60,000. Seat belt drivers side was never fixed right. Squeak was only temp fixed in front end, it came back. Took service manager for a ride. I think he got out and sprayed a lube on something. That's it not at 90,000 my trans is screwed up and my cooling system too and I'm sure there is going to be a problem with this purple slush to my engine! Too many need this, for it not to be a recall before someone gets killed! or should I call it murdered?

After completing the 60,000 mile service yesterday my mechanic told me about two same-year Xterras that recently had $3,000+ in transmission repairs because of a manufacturing design defect in the radiator assembly. He said that my Xterra WILL have the same defect appear in the miles ahead and strongly recommended that I fix it immediately. Or be prepared to pay $3,000+ at a later time.

I discovered yesterday that I am over a year late in submitting a claim form to Nissan or remaining in as a member of the Settlement Class for this particular problem. In other words, Nissan has insulated itself from this particular problem. I will now go out of my way to TELL EVERYONE TO NEVER BUY A NISSAN VEHICLE. Up until this point in time I have been a loyal customer, and believed that the company was reputable and would stand behind its product line. No more!
