CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005-2007 Xterra appears to have a widespread defect where coolant leaks into the transmission, causing transmission failure around 90,000 miles. Repair costs are typically upwards of $3,500.
The same defect exists in the Pathfinder & Frontier as well. And according to the New York Times & a class action lawsuit, the defect actually extends through 2010 model year. More info here.

There was a recall for this problem I had with the fuel gauge sensor for up to 80,000 miles....Nissan World of Denville, NJ wouldn't fix it because I was 1000 Miles over the warranty. I can't pass inspection due to the check engine light always on because of this.
i won't rehash the actual problem of the fuel sending unit, plenty of people have had it an know about it. nissan actually has a service bulletin out on the issue. my issue is actually with nissan. how can they say that this is not safety related for a recall. what if i run out of gas (especially when it first happened and i didn't know about the problem) on a busy highway while driving or going through an intersection. the cars computer is smart enough to realize that it is not working so the check engine light comes on. what if another safety related malfunction happens that my engine light would typically warn me about, now i won't know because my light is already on. Unlike the the coolant/trans possible issue (which should also be recalled and scares the crap out of me), this issue is really inexpensive to fix. i'm sure the part doesn't cost them much, the service guide calls for a 1.9hr fix. I'm sure the nissan techs can have this done in under an hour (maybe a $100 tops on their end). It seems that in this 2005-2007 range that everyone loves their xterra until it hits around 70,000-90,000 miles. i purchased mine pre-owned, still owe close to 14k, and am closing on on 70,000. i shouldn't have to feel this worried about a car that i was hoping to get to 200,000 miles without any major problems. they are not doing much for customer loyalty here. I'm thinking about trading this in and it won't be for another nissan with their current track record of dealing with the current known problems (fuel sender/trans-coolant).
po463 error code-fuel sending unit high voltage-replace unit. Again, Nissan seems to be aware of this as a problem, but because my car is over 72,000, may not be covered under warranty. Makes me seriously disinclined to be a repeat Nissan customer!
Fuel gauge is broken and emissions will not pass our car unless we get this problem fixed. We do not have $800 to fix it. It should be up to the car company for their defect. It was not wear and tear and it was not a fault of our own. We bought this car brand new and expected a quality vehicle!

bought the Xterra about 4 years ago. it has been really solid up until the fuel level sensor went bad as it does on every Nissan built from the year 2000+ it seems. It went bad at approximately 64K miles, but we did not get the letter about extending the warranty to 72K miles until a couple months ago when we were over on miles. Now Nissan will do nothing for us. i will never purchase another Nissan vehicle ever again. the level of customer service just blows me away to think that they would rather lose a customer than install and pay for a $90 part. thanks for nothing Nissan.
Check engine light is on AGAIN in this truck which lately seems to occur every 3 months for something. This time gives me a code P0463 which fuel sending unit is now bad on it. Fill up the tank the gauge goes to dead empty with low fuel light on until tank gets down to approx half it will start reading again. Called Nissan AGAIN found out it went for a recall in which we were never notified on to a extended warranty for 73,000 miles. I have 78,000 & Nissan customer care saw truck 3 weeks ago and now we are STILL waiting for an answer from them if they will cover the $800 expense to fix sending unit. At this point I am very disgusted in them & there customer service to where I will never buy another one. I am trading it in this week to take a $3500 loss on it just to get rid of the POC
The mid level fuel sensor is malfunctioning. It is my understanding Nissan put a bulletin out to the dealers about this issue..The bulletin says the mid level sensor needs to be replaced. it is a part attached to the pump.Not the entire fuel pump... Unfortunately the the tank has to be removed in order to swap out the part. the pump will still need to be removed from the tank..This is a very expensive repair. The sensor will cost under 200.00. The labor will be three times more expensive than the part...
Hopefully they will get enough complaints and do something about this issue.
I had my oil changed and the same day my service engine light came on. It had happened once before and went off so I really wasn' t worried. I thought it would go out on it's own. It has been almost a week and it's still on. I went to an area Auto Zone and they hooked it to their computer and it was the code for a faulty fuel sending unit. I immediately went to the gas station and filled it to the brim so I would be sure I wouldn't run out. I filled up with gas and the needle went up to full and then immediately dropped below the E and the low fuel light came on. I called the closest Nissan dealer and made an appointment but may cancel. I cannot afford to replace this unit. I do have a 3 year extended Warranty but I am sure they will try to say it is something like "a squirrel chewed the wires" and that is not a covered repair. I will never buy another Nissan and if I ever win one in a contest, I would sell it.
I filled my car with gas on 12-11-10 and started it forgetting to put the gas cap on. My SES light went on and the gas gauge was still showing 1/4 of a tank. No big deal, I thought and after two days the SES light went off and gas was showing full. Filled up again two weeks later and the same thing happened. Gas gauge was every so slightly increasing over the course of a few days and SES light went out.
I took my vehicle in today for routine oil change and had mechanic check out the problem. Diagnostics determined it was the fuel level sensor which I'm now reading is a real problem for many X-Terra, Pathfinder and Frontier owners. The cost to repair???? $300!!!! It seems they have to drop the gas tank to replace this defective part. However in doing research, Nissan has extended the warranty for CERTAIN models from 36 months/36,000 miles to 72 months/72,000 miles before 2013. This listed on their website at www.nissanassist.com. I called my local dealer and they verified by my VIN# that my vehicle qualifies for this replacement under the extended warranty.
My check engine light stays constantly on. I had it checked with a meter and it indicated the fuel sensor was faulty. I asked the mechanic how much it would cost to fix and he said the entire fuel pump had to be replaced at a cost of $600.00.
I have a 2007 Nissan Xterra and the SES light is constantly on because of the bad fuel sensor gauge. I understand this is an ongoing problem with Nissan vehicles however, Nissan is ignoring the problem. I feel with all the consumers that are experiencing this same problem that Nissan should have a recall to replace this problem as soon as possible. I will never buy another Nissan vehicle again. How can we as consumers make Nissan pay attention to this ongoing problem with their vehicles? Who can we contact or do we just have to live with the problem?
