CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005-2007 Xterra appears to have a widespread defect where coolant leaks into the transmission, causing transmission failure around 90,000 miles. Repair costs are typically upwards of $3,500.

The same defect exists in the Pathfinder & Frontier as well. And according to the New York Times & a class action lawsuit, the defect actually extends through 2010 model year. More info here.

Our Xterra developed a rear differential whine at around 110,000 miles. We checked the fluid level and noticed that the level was fine, but the fluid has been contaminated with water. After doing some research we figured out that the axle, which is a version of the Dana 44, is pretty solid EXCEPT for the fact that the breather vent is located in a very stupid spot.

If you notice, it is the little nub on the right side of the axle tube. Instead of having a nice hose from the axle tube or differential housing up to the frame or body with a valve on it there, it is on practically the lowest part of the axle. Therefore, if you drive through any amount of water, water gets into the differential and makes the lubricant fail. The cost? For us $2,500.

The whole rear end had to be rebuilt and new wheel bearings and seals installed. Very disappointing.

Not to mention, mud clogs the breather on this very low vent and causes the wheel seals to blow out and leak axle lube all over your brakes (see other complaint).

Very bad design Nissan. What would have costed you pennies, is costing us thousands at a dealer.
