The same defect exists in the Pathfinder & Frontier as well. And according to the New York Times & a class action lawsuit, the defect actually extends through 2010 model year. More info here.

The silver paint for this model year appears to be faulty. The paint clear coat bubbles and peels off. When I've called auto body shops about getting it repainted they are all well aware of the issue as it is common among silver 2005 Nissan Xterras. I've had them guess and tell me what year and color my car is because they are so familiar with the problem. I don't have an exact date, but it started to peel off in about 2018.
