CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2004 Nissan Xterra doesn't seem to have any problem trends. The only thing prospective owners should be aware of are the less-than-perfect (but acceptable) crash test ratings.
There are a very few transmission complaints, but nothing like the huge defect that shows up starting in with the 2005 model year.

Four wheel drive, when I put the lever into four wheel drive it take forever for it to come back out (the shifter moves but the light stays on) their are times the 4X4 light is dimly light? and other times it comes on for no reason, serviced twice was told they replaced a switch on the unit. Problem still exisits.
