CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2003 Nissan Xterra doesn't seem to have any problem trends. The only thing prospective owners should be aware of are the less-than-perfect (but acceptable) crash test ratings.
There are a very few transmission complaints, but nothing like the huge defect that shows up starting in with the 2005 model year.
We have owned this car since 2004 and have paid for multiple repairs. As you can see, we do not put a great deal of miles on the car. Apparently there was a recall - that we were NOT notified of - for the fuel pump. A recall that would have fixed the problem for free - without leaving anyone stranded on the side of the road or without a vehicle for a week. It definitely would not have cost us almost $1000 - which we had to pay. We recently purchased a Versa as well. We had thought ourselves to be a Nissan family, but not if this is the way things work. Any other recalls that we probably paid for?
