My wife was driving 2 miles home from work when her Nissan Versa SR curtain and seat-mounted side airbag system deployed for no apparent reason. These air bags encapsulated her resulting in suffocation and she was very lucky the fire department truck was right behind her and were able to stop and rescue her via cutting her out of these air bags so she could breath - otherwise she would have been dead. In addition, she was unable to steer or brake the car; but, was only going at 25 MPH so car slowed and stopped in the middle of the road.
She contacted AAA to tow the auto to the Nissan Dealership for repairs and I was arrived shortly after and found the dealership service rep yelling at her trying to get her to admit to hitting the curb with her tire... there was no curb nor any sort of accident and the air bags malfunctioned for unknown reasons. The dealership subsequently has to refused to honor the warranty by trying to blame the driver (my wife) and saying the tire was impacted. The engine computer code reads a code indicating there was a roll-over which activated the air bags. The only damage was the deployed air bags and my wife who was bruised and traumatized with delayed shock and PTSD. She is now terrified of ever driving another Nissan and so am I since this is the second Nissan I've owned where dealerships will not honor the warranties. The problem with Nissan Side Air Bags does not seem to have been fixed... the bigger problem is what happens if these air bags deploy for no reason when one is driving during rush hour traffic at 70 MPH and one can't steer or brake?
