CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2012-2017 Nissan Versa has an expensive CVT transmission failure defect that shows up plainly in our complaint data.

In late 2019, the CVT defect was subject to a class action settlement. However the settlement only covers transmission repairs up to 7 years after purchase or 84,000 miles (whichever occurs first).

Because many owners commonly drive 20,000 miles/year or more, Versa owners experiencing CVT transmission problems may find they are not covered by this settlement due to the mileage limitation.

Car wouldn't start (or even turn over), knew it had something to do with the shift because when I took it from park, to neutral to park again, it would work. The bushing on the transmission shift cable had worn out due to a seized pivot. Also can't just replace the pivot either, you have to replace the whole thing. It's a pain in the ass too because you can't get to it from the inside of the car, you have to drop the exhaust, drop the heat shield, and then replace the whole length of the cable from the shifter to the transmission.

not shifting out of park

So many times I've been stuck in my parking spot, at a store, at a drive-thru, etc with my car stuck in park. I learned to remain calm, and wiggle the shifter, and keep trying. Sometimes I restarted my car and shut the lights off and found that helped.

Stuck, till you get the stupid thing out of park. Finally got it going and got it back to the dealer. They said they had to re-adjust the linkage. It worked but sometimes stuck afterwards.

I just bought this car 6 months ago and without warning my car would not come out of park. The shifter was stuck! Because I'm 2000 miles out my warranty it wouldn't be covered. Luckily I had an extended warranty. I was stranded and on my lunch break. Luckily I called nissan and they told me how to over ride this with my automatic transmission. When I got it to the service shop they said there was a recall on certain 2012 nissan versas. Of course they called Nissan dealership and they said my car was not in the recall. I believe this is a maufacturer defect and they should pay for fixing it. I dont know if I will buy another Versa or Nissan for that matter. Other problems have come up with the vehicle as well. Needless to say I have no car until they figure it out and I have to go to work! This was supposed to be a dependable vehicle! Thats what I needed as I have a daughter that has a disability. Not a happy consumer.
