Truck gave me a Check Engine Light. I stopped at Autozone. The code read Nox Sensor Bad, Dealer only item. $500.
I took it to dealer, $165 I was told for them to diagnosis it. I had 23,000 miles on a 2016 Nissan Titan XD Platinum Reserve with Cummins 5.0. I purchased the Nissan Dealers "Easy Care Warranty" Total Care Plan at purchase of the truck. I thought because I was told it was bumper to bumper as stated on the contract on page 2 in bold print, that is what it meant. I did not see the fine print on a page in the package in the middle of the page with approximately 100 paragraphs on it about exclusions to the Bumper to Bumper Coverage.
So I was expecting to be taken care of after having paid $2000 for the extended to 120,000 mile 84 month coverage. Dealer after diagnosing the code looked at the DEF System. Technician stated the Diesel Exhaust Fluid was good but the SCR was more than likely the part that failed according to the Nissan Tech Web Site comments. Service Advisor told me that would cost me $4000 to replace that even though it was only a best guess that is what failed.
I had no guarantee that would fix it and they may have to throw other parts at it to fix the problem. Since I live in a State that does not have emissions testing Nissan does not abide by the Federal Emissions Warranty. So the total costs will be on me. Worse than that, I really had not other option as the fault will throw the truck into a 5 Mile per hour limp mode "sometime" and lock it in. Only way to get out of limp mode is to have it towed to dealer service department and have their Diesel Technician unlock it.
Nissan Dealer Service Departments in all the dealerships do not hire diesel technicians any more. Nissan discontinued their Diesel line in 2019 so I guess they feel no need to hire more. I contacted a couple other shops in the area and I was told Nissan has a no compete contract with the other shops in area so they cannot work on any Nissans newer than a 2002.
Update from Jan 20, 2021: So after the dealers service department told me they read online that after 23,000 miles the catalyst (SCR) will need to be replaced but since the Warranty Manual excludes the SCR on Diesel engines, and I assume that is because of the cost of all the premature failures. The cost to replace and Possibly repair the system will start at $4000. I took my truck to an independent Diesel Pickup Shop to see what their diagnostics report would say. Unfortunately, that shop told me that they also think the SCR failed. And he has seen it on the Titan Diesel Trucks a few times at low mileage on a system that is suppose to last at least 100,000 miles. I called Nissan Customer service and informed Nissan that if they do not replace my truck with a similar truck which is a top of the line Titan Platinum Reserve. I will contact an attorney.
