CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2013-2017 Nissan Sentra has an expensive CVT transmission failure defect that shows up plainly in our complaint data from the earlier model years in this same 7th generation Sentra.
In late 2019, the CVT defect was subject to a class action settlement. However the settlement only covers transmission repairs up to 7 years after purchase or 84,000 miles (whichever occurs first).
Because many owners commonly drive 20,000 miles/year or more, Sentra owners experiencing CVT transmission problems may find they are not covered by this settlement due to the mileage limitation.

I purchased this car for my High School graduate daughter for her to drive to school and work. We've only had the car for about 2yrs and now the transmission has gone out. The transmission is a CVT, it is unable to be fixed it simply needs to be replaced. We are looking at $9700.00 in repairs. We owe $8000.00. Do the math! Not good! The stress level around my house is insane. I have 5 kids, 3 of which are toddlers. I'm trying to help my 2 older kids get on their feet. We bought her the car so she can start her life! And all it's been, is literally a migraine! She suffers from major depression and anxiety, so the purchase of her car was such a positive and happy time for her. She felt hopeful. Now she is so discouraged, she knows there is no way we can pay the repair costs of almost 10k and still pay off 8k on the loan. She is often disappointed with things in life. This time, her having her own car and looking for what makes her happy was something exciting to look forward to. So, you can imagine how she's feeling about all this. How we ALL feel about the stress of the failings of a car that was meant to bring her joy.
The Class Action Lawsuit regarding the CVTs of Nissan was settled by extending the warranty by 24k (60k miles +24k miles) miles or +2yrs (5yrs + 2yrs) whichever came first. This doesn't help us. We purchased the vehicle at a Used Car Dealership only 2yrs ago. We are now having problems with the transmission. We have 95k miles (that's 11k miles over) and or 2 months over on the extended warranty. The extended warranty expired 4/11/23 and it is now 6/1/23. I'm exhausted. This is ridiculous!!! If the transmissions ARE BAD, something we already know and Nissan admitted, then we and anyone else who have a Nissan within these years 2013-2018 should be taken care of WHENEVER the transmission goes out. Extending the warranty does not help everybody that is in the same situation as us, and that is NOT fair! And it's the cause of major stress and anxiety, I'm sure for everyone that purchased a Nissan with false hope and trust that it would be a forever car. Nissans are supposed to be reliable, and I am literally traumatized with all this.
