CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2013-2017 Nissan Sentra has an expensive CVT transmission failure defect that shows up plainly in our complaint data from the earlier model years in this same 7th generation Sentra.

In late 2019, the CVT defect was subject to a class action settlement. However the settlement only covers transmission repairs up to 7 years after purchase or 84,000 miles (whichever occurs first).

Because many owners commonly drive 20,000 miles/year or more, Sentra owners experiencing CVT transmission problems may find they are not covered by this settlement due to the mileage limitation.

Cvt transmission failure - the vehicle had been "tugging" and "stuttering" when it had less than 60,000 miles I took in for service before extended warranty expired they said nothing wrong, a few months later while driving on the freeway to work, the rpms began going crazy and the car felt like it was really starting to have trouble changing gears, pulled over and the vehicle didn't want to drive forward or reverse. Left it parked at a gas station next to my work.

Vehicle stalled when I pressed down on the gas pedal to accelerate. 1 mile before stalling it started to judder when I would come to a complete stop and jerk me forward when I would excelerate from a stop. I turned off my vehicle after it stalled, shifted to park, and turned off the vehicle. When I turned it back on and shifted to drive it accelerated, slower than usual and I was able to park. Prior to this incident, I took the vehicle in for the juddering problem 7 days ago and they replaced the cvt control valve.

When driving down the highway going about 60 to 70 mph on the highway the car starts to lose power/gain power and the RPM gauge is constantly going up and down, the dealership I bought the car from (drivetime) I have been back and forth with them for the last 2 weeks and they tell me there is nothing they can do because 2 out of 3 shops said nothing was wrong so I then got a video of what was happening and I sent it in to them like they asked and waited another week just for them to tell me that the next thing to do is what I told them in the begging ' change the transmission fluid' and that they could review it once I send in an invoice. I've paid $2,100 on this car in the month I have had it due to problems and the refuse to reimburse me for anything unless it's in a shop getting more then 8 hours of physical labor. So my car being in and out of 3 shops in a week doesn't count for anything.

The transmission is acting up. The car gets stuck, makes whining noises, can't go uphill, won't accelerate, slows to a complete stop, etc. There were issues with the car prior to it getting this bad. I took is to a Nissan dealership several times but it wasn't diagnosed for some reason. It took some time for it to almost completely clunk out.

The car will switch gears when I'm driving. It has happened multiple times - the last time was this weekend when I was traveling. I was driving on the interstate, up a mountain. All of the sudden the car started decelerating as I was going up the mountain. The gear shift caused the car to dramatically slow down and almost caused a multi-car pileup because there was a lot of traffic.

The contact owns a 2015 Nissan Sentra. While driving various speeds, the vehicle lost power, but did not shut off. Also, the rpms decreased. The contact mentioned that the failures occurred after the vehicle had been driven for awhile. The vehicle was towed to a local repair shop where the master air flow was replaced. The vehicle was then towed to michael jordan Nissan (3930 durham-chapel hill blvd, durham, nc 27707, (919) 489-3800) where the contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures. The failure mileage was 85,000.

The contact owns a 2015 Nissan Sentra. While driving approximately 50 mph on the highway, the vehicle lurched and overheated. The contact had to wait several minutes before the vehicle became operable. The failure occurred without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed as transmission failure. The vehicle was then taken to benson Nissan (1100 N pine St, spartanburg, SC) where the transmission failure was confirmed. The dealer advised that the transmission be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified and did not assist. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

I have gone multiple times to the Nissan service department because my vehicle will randomly stop shifting gears. It will be stuck in 3rd gear and will stop accelerating. Multiple times I have been on the highway and my car would not go faster than 40mph. I video taped it and showed the mechanic but he said because it wasn't doing it when I took it they couldn't do anything. My check engine light comes on and off randomly also. My car is right out of the manufacturers warranty with 64000 miles. My driver side window is also having problems. The engine is going out. With the issues I am having with accelerating and the gears not shifting I am afraid to drive on the highway because I never know when my car is not going to accelerate.

Tamara recall my car started out jerking when changing gears. Right when my warranty was out it got a lot worse. I had to pay almost $5000 to replace my transmission bc I was trying to get on the highway and my car wouldn't go even five mph and I had a 18 wheeler coming up on me and almost got hit. It went from jerking and struggling then my rpms were bouncing all over the place then it just quit driving at all in no time. There has been tons of complaints and lots of recalls for other years on this issue and they need to recall this one. It's could have cost me my life! the transmission is bad on Nissan Sentra! I ended up being able to pull over and prevent my death, thank god! I turned off my car and calmed down then started it up and was able to get off the highway and get it too the shop. Now I have been paying in a rental car for over 2 weeks and my car still isn't done! I will never get another Nissan! I have kids and this was the scariest thing to me! very unsafe!

I am so disappointed. I bought a brand new Nissan Sentra not even 6 months after owning this vehicle I had to take it in for repairs for what I am certain was a transmission, well they said there was nothing wrong. Few weeks after that same issue so I took it in again and they said oh it's the mass air flow sensor. Well a month after that same problem, take it in again and they say oh it's only an oxygen sensor I believe they said and replaced it. Well guess what? month later I am driving with my wife and 2 young children ages 11 & 6 on a very busy 4 lane highway suddenly same exact issue car will not accelerate above 35 mph and then stalls out in the middle of the highway causing my family to literally miss getting rear ended by a semi by maybe a foot, again I was nearly certain it's the transmission have it towed there and again they say no, this time it's the throttle body. I have wrote corporate, my local dealer ship and all they keep saying is the warranty is now up, however, if the problem persist the will cover it. I am literally petrified to put my family back in this 🍋 lemon and now it literally sits in my driveway reminding of what a poor brand is. Bought the vehicle brand new and for 2 years it's been in the shop half a dozen times or more for the same issue that they keep saying is something else when I am certain it is the transmission, so I am stuck with a lemon and the payments on a lemon that myself nor my wife are comfortable driving for fear of the next close call with a semi becoming reality thanks Nissan for refusing to admit it's the transmission and replacing every part in the car but the transmission.

When driving out of an apartment complex my RPM needle just up to 5000 RPM and wouldn't not accelerate. Once on the freeway the RPM needle will fluctuate between 2000 and 5000 RPM before accelerating again. Once I got off the freeway and got 2 miles down the road with the same issue the car just stopped accelerating. Even when I floor the gas pedal the RPM needle didn't move at all. So while traveling at about 20 mph I have to let the car off the road to a grocery store parking lot and come to a complete stop. I turned off the engine and pulled the key out the ignition and then restarted the car to see if that would fix the problem but it only gave me the ability to accelerate again but still with the same RPM fluctuations as before. This is too dangerous and I have to get my car back to the dealership. I just got an oil change about 2 days prior at 54000 miles

'takata recall' I brought my car used at 34,000 miles. A little after I brought I took it to Nissan because it was stalling and was acting like it wasn't getting any power., while I was on the freeway. They told me they fixed the problem so when my car got to 66,000 miles and a year later it is was jumping, jerking and stalling a lot more. I was at a stop sign driving in to work and my car wouldn't go. So I put it in park and it was acting like it wasn't getting any power to the trans. I had to get out my car and have some co workers help me push it to a parking stall. When I got off work I tried to drive it again and it would only go into reverse. So I had to get my car towed to mossy Nissan. So I had it towed to Nissan again. I found out that I need a new transmission. I was told that the trans on the Sentra are really really bad. Also my warranty was up.

Cvt issues while driving, RPM kicks up to 4.5, 5 then drops to 3 then 2 then kicks up to 4.5 again with loss of power -- this is while driving on highway. While driving on city street, the RPM with feel as if it gets stuck prior to kicking in to gear after stopping then accelerating again such as at a red light; if I need to speed up quickly for some reason, my car simply will not accelerate unless I mash the pedal to the floorboard and it jerks up RPM then will accelerate.

Revving of the engine due to malfunction of the transmissions, loss of power to the drive shaft constant slipping of the transmission, sometimes loss of power to the6 engine. Called Nissan usa tp what can be done with the problem since they acknowledged earlier model hard similar problem and Nissan extended their warranty to 10 yrs 120000 miles. However they decline an extension in my case, sayi G the problem of the cvt type transmmission has been resolved. However that does not seem to be the case. L see numerous blog online complaining about these type of transmmission-cvt ones similar to the earlier model with the extended warranty given. Problem is encountered when im motoion on highway city street. Stop and go situation.
