CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2013-2017 Nissan Sentra has an expensive CVT transmission failure defect that shows up plainly in our complaint data.

In late 2019, the CVT defect was subject to a class action settlement. However the settlement only covers transmission repairs up to 7 years after purchase or 84,000 miles (whichever occurs first).

Because many owners commonly drive 20,000 miles/year or more, Sentra owners experiencing CVT transmission problems may find they are not covered by this settlement due to the mileage limitation.

Took car to dealer as passenger side airbag warning light comes on sometimes when my wife is in passenger seat, dealer said no outstanding recall & no codes showed on their inspection. Said passenger must weigh at least 120 lbs which my wife does. This is a critical safety issue. Never had a problem in any other owned cars. I am sure there are many small women who weigh less than 120 lbs in this country. This needs to be fixed otherwise Nissan could be subject to a major lawsuit if serious injury or death as result of airbag not inflating.

I reported this problem to Nissan February 2015. They have not been able to fix this yet. NHTSA campaign number: 16V244000 last time I brought my vehicle in Nov 28, I gave them a video I had taken of the passenger air bag light indicating the airbag was disabled on Nov 26 during a trip from san francisco to la. The passenger air bag was disabled during 120 miles of the trip. The technician said that this can happen if I move, like lifting your butt to remove your wallet out of your back pocket, I just have to pull the vehicle over to the side of the road, turn it off, wait for a minute and start it again. I pointed out how ridiculous that statement was. So what happens if you drive on a bumpy road? he responded: Ok, we will reset the sensor but it will probably not solve the problem. He was right in that, same evening the passenger air bag got disabled again. I have several videos of the air bag being disabled at multiple occasions while driving on streets and highways. The car have now been in twice for Nissan to fix this problem. But they don't seem to have the ability to do just that.

Passenger side airbag indicator light goes on and off. Does not recognize when a 135 pound person is sitting in the passenger seat. Noticed the recall on NHTSA and took the vehicle to streater smith Nissan in conroe Texas. They performed a zero point reset and said there were no recalls on this vehicle when it is clearly listed on the NHTSA website. I have real concerns that Nissan has not seen fit to order an actual recall on this defective issue. Because until they do their dealers will not fix the situation. The vehicle was in motion with a passenger in the seat. I do not remember the exact date with a passenger in the vehicle the date below is when the vehicle was taken to Nissan.

The passenger air bag light illuminates indicating the passenger side air bag is disabled during travel intermittently both with and without a passenger present in the passenger seat. It has happened during all types of driving and seems to occur more frequently when making a relatively sharp right hand turn. Dealer did update firmware and/or re-calibrate the air bag system under warranty but this did not resolve the issue. I believe one or more air bag components is intermittently failing. The duration of the air bag light staying illuminated has been anywhere from a few seconds to 30+ minutes. First taken to dealer in July 2015, have called and/or been back in several time since. They have stated they must be able to reproduce the issue in order to diagnose/resolve. Please note this is an air bag system intermittently failing, not something less critical like a radio or air conditioner.
