CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2013-2017 Nissan Sentra has an expensive CVT transmission failure defect that shows up plainly in our complaint data.

In late 2019, the CVT defect was subject to a class action settlement. However the settlement only covers transmission repairs up to 7 years after purchase or 84,000 miles (whichever occurs first).

Because many owners commonly drive 20,000 miles/year or more, Sentra owners experiencing CVT transmission problems may find they are not covered by this settlement due to the mileage limitation.

While driving the car would lose acceleration. The first time it had happen it was around April 2017 on a hot day. I thought maybe me turning the air on plus with the heat that it was the reason for the malfuction, but then it did it again a few days later while I was turning onto a busy intersection. I took it to a close friend of mine to ask if he had any known solutions to why I am losing acceleration while driving. But he didn't know of any. So for a while it was driving normal...at least I thought. My daughter had used the vehicle and I forgot to tell her about the acceleration issue, but she almost got into an accident due to the lost of acceleration. I then started paying more attention and was going to take it somewhere professional to get it looked at.unfortunately I did not get it looked at fast enough as the acceleration went out again and caused me to have an accident. As I was driving and coming around a curve the acceleration once again left and as I have done in the past hit the pedal multiple times to try to get it to rev up so that I can drive. Only this time and after hitting the pedal multiple times it jerked and rev hard which startled me and I loss control of the car. My car flipped over 3 times. By the grace of god I survived. Puzzled and trying to get my self back on my feet I started to research what potentially could have been wrong with that car only to learn that I was not the only person who experienced this with Sentra. I am glad others was safe, but I also feel that when I purchased this car from carmax that any and all recalls should have been pointed out to me. Or at least something from Nissan due to me being a new owner pointing out any issues they had with these cars. This not only traumatized me it also cause me to be labeled with insurance compaines as (at fault) driver. Meaning my insurance payments have skyrocketed...updated 08/04/17 updated 08/07/17

I brought my car into the dealer today for service on two recalls, the cvt, and the passenger airbag. These recalls are updating the computer. On my way home from the dealer, my car would not accelerate properly. When I would remove my foot from the accelerator and reapplied it, there was a long delay in the acceleration. Due to this delay I was almost in an accident, because I was not able to accelerate out of the way of an oncoming car. By blowing my horn, I got the attention of the other driver and I avoided the accident. I called the dealer and spoke to the service manager to explain what happened. Tomorrow morning I am bringing the car back in to have it checked out.

My first indecent occurred while driving down a state highway with my cruise control on, my cruise control was cut off. As I was trying to accelerate back to my driving speed, the gas pedal felt loose and my car was having trouble revving up to accelerate and would not let me accelerate back up to posted highway speeds. The car then "jumped" forward and went back to normal and allowed me accelerate. However, I was not able to engage my cruise control back to normal and would cut it off every time I set it. I took my car to the dealership the next day for an initial recall notice to be fixed and explained also what happened. When I described my issue the service man had said it sounded as if my transmission was slipping, that they would look at it. After recall was cared for and two test drives later, they found nothing wrong with the vehicle. Told me if problem comes back to bring in immediately. On 07/06/2016 on my drive home at night, I came to a light and yielded, upon trying to accelerate to turn my car failed to accelerate and was having issues once again revving up! I drifted in to a nearby parking lot, put my car in park, turned it off for a few minutes then turned it back on. It acted fine until I was further down on a state highway and it was giving issues accelerating again. I contacted the dealership the next day (07/07) and was told to bring it in. They called me after sometime, and made me aware of what was wrong with my vehicle(condensation in the tail lights!) and how it was affecting my vehicle. I was also told that it was a manufacturer issue and that the manufacturer and Nissan are aware of the issue but have yet to issue a recall!! this is a serious issue that can lead to a fatal accident!!

After attempting to accelerate from stop at a stop sign, the Sentra would not accelerate higher than about 10 mph. I pushed the gas pedal to the floor, and still no acceleration. After a minute or so, it went back to normal. Over the course of an hour long drive, this happened at least 5 times. ABS indicator also came on when pushing the brake. Vdc and slip lights came on and stayed on for about half an hour. It will perform normally for a day or two. Then start malfunctioned at random. Two attempts have been made at the dealership to fix it according to diagnostic test which indicated the "brake switch code". brake switch replaced and vehicle performed normally for two days the performed worse than before part was changed.
