CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2013-2017 Nissan Sentra has an expensive CVT transmission failure defect that shows up plainly in our complaint data.

In late 2019, the CVT defect was subject to a class action settlement. However the settlement only covers transmission repairs up to 7 years after purchase or 84,000 miles (whichever occurs first).

Because many owners commonly drive 20,000 miles/year or more, Sentra owners experiencing CVT transmission problems may find they are not covered by this settlement due to the mileage limitation.

Automatic transmission- rpms don't match mph, car shakes when idle, noticeable clunk when switching from park/revere/drive, noticeable strain on car when going faster than 60mph. Transmission blown at 30,000, repaired, blown again at 72,000.

Transmission failed while driving 60 mph on a busy highway. Had problems moving the Sentra over to breakdown lane due traffic and the sudden de-acceleration. The Sentra required towing 60 miles back to our local Nissan dealership at our, the owners, expense. The Nissan dealership confirmed the transmission had failed, noting this is not uncommon with the Sentra. Our 2013 Sentra has an automatic transmission (cvt) and less than 40,000 miles on the odometer when the transmission failed. The cost to replace the transmission was covered under warranty.

As I was driving down the interstate at 65 miles an hour the car stopped accelerating. I was able to maneuver the vehicle to the side and call for aaa. The next day I called the dealership and reported to them what happened and they asked if the car still turned on and if so, did it go into gear. It did so I drove it to them 7 miles away. Once I got to 30 mph, the RPM's went to 4 and would not decrease until the car lost all power. I was able to shut the car off and turn it back on to cete the drive. The car was diagnosed with internal transmission failure. I have brought the car to Nissan 3 times prior and they claimed nothing was wrong and that this was normal for a cvt. Once the car reached over 60K and was officially diagnosed with transmission failure they let me know it would be $4,300 to fix. I opened a case and Nissan states because the car was diagnosed post warranty they will not cover it. I explained I have the documentatiom proving I was in there prior to warranty expiring and the women said that doesn't matter, the official diagnosis was post warranty eligibility guidelines.

I have returned to Nissan service, they performed software update to correct problem, received car back on 1-5-18, driving home, about 60 miles I begin up a interstate hill, and slipping happens again, I call Nissan service and let them know the tranmission is still slipping, service guy says they have done everything they can... When we purchased the car (new) we complained immediately about the transmission. The dealer told us it was normal for that model transmission. They didn't document our complaint. We told our mechanic several times that we weren't happy with it as well. He researched with Nissan and was told that there was no problems with the transmission. We have since researched on our own and found out otherwise. The night that the transmission "went" I had been traveling on the turnpike and had to be towed home. The car seemed like it wasn't getting the gas, it bucked, smelled and sounded horrible. I barely managed to get T to a safe place to pull off the turnpike. I had my granddaughter with me and needed to be able to stop in a safe place. We have not yet decide whether to try fixing it or to lease another car. Researching the problem shows many people still not satisfied after repairing the transmission.

While driving the car, it sporadically does not shift gears sometimes causing loss of power and high RPM's jerking the car. This is very unsafe because you never know when it is going to happen. Losing power can cause very unsafe conditions on the road when pulling out into traffic. It seems that when you accelerate rapidly like when going on a highway ramp or accelerating after slowing to make a turn, the car gets stuck in I would say 3rd gear and not shift higher. The RPM's skyrocket and max out, killing the power to the engine. Then you have to come to a complete stop and slowly accelerate hoping that all the gears shift. The car only has 69K miles on it!!!!

This Nissan Sentra is not safe to drive. You can not get the car to accelerate entering the highway, have to use a screwdriver to get it to go into reverse, it makes rubbing noises and is a complete failure Nissan should be proactive instead of reactive will take someone getting hurt before they do something?

Sentra

  • 45,000 miles
The cvt began failing around 45,000 miles (about 4 years use). There was a jerking back and forth motion and the tachometer would rev up above 2,000 RPM and then fall back. Plus, there was a horrible, grating-type noise emanating from the car. The dealer at which I bought the car had gone out of business so I took the Sentra to a different Nissan dealer where they replaced the cvt with a different, "remanufactured" unit. Well, just 2-3 weeks later, that second cvt also began to fail! I thought the car was going to die on a busy highway but, fortunately, managed to make it to my exit. I got to the first traffic light and stopped. When the light turned green, the car would not move when I applied gas. I shut off the car and turned it back on and could then finally get it to slowly move. Needless to say, I returned to the dealer where the rep said it was really "unheard of" for a transmission to fail twice. But when I called a few days later, he told me that the computer had shown some sort of failure. Now, nearly 2 weeks later, I still don't have my car back. I suspect that transmission #3 also failed and, perhaps, the dealer doesn't know what to do at this time. I do not feel safe in this car and I don't think I will ever trust another cvt from any manufacturer. I want to stress that the dealer has been wonderful! this is my fourth Nissan vehicle (2 maximas, then an Altima, now the Sentra) and they were very reliable. I got nearly 180,000 miles on the second maxima and nearly 150,000 miles on the Altima. But neither of those 2 vehicles had cvts! thank goodness my powertrain warranty is still in effect!

Sentra

  • 13,987 miles
Car has only 13,987 original miles. While accelerating from a stop, accelerating from any speed, vehicle loses all throttle control / response, idle may hang at 3200 suddenly during acceleration then take 30-40 seconds to drop back to normal. You may or may not have warning lights and/or fault codes set. Transmission shifting is erratic or none at all (stays in high gear). Fault codes if any are most likely electrical circuit, low voltage type codes. Warning lights may be traction / stability control, check engine, ABS in any combination. The fault is moisture (water / condensation) collecting in a tail light and shorting the circuit which is connected to the engine / transmission electronics. The tail light may not have any sign of damage / cracks / holes but the water presence causing the short can damage or destroy the transmission if not corrected not to mention the possibility of an accident due to a stuck throttle at 3200 RPM in traffic. Nissan is aware of this issue but has no recall at this time (waiting for the accidents I guess)

I was driving my car down the street and the car just stopped on me in the middle of the road. Nissan knew they sold me a car with a faulty transmission and now they will not fix it due to saying it is out of warranty. Now I am stuck with a car that I can not drive and need to come up with thousands of dollars to get the car repaired. 2013 Nissan Sentra transmissions need to be recalled and paid for by Nissan due to selling cars that they know are no good.
