In Jan 2020, I had been traveling for about 2 hours with the vehicle on cruise control, about 70 mph, when the rpms shot up to dangerous levels. I immediately braked and turned off cruise. Rpms went down, and I pulled over, waiting a while before continuing with the car turned off. I travelled very slowly (reaching about 30-40 mph), then as I pressed the gas to the floor, and the car accelerated very slowly, finally reaching about 65 (after several minutes). It would not go faster for a long time and I didn't use my cruise again that trip.
After reaching my destination, I didn't travel far or fast for several days. This happened again, in Aug 2020, on a trip on the interstate under the same conditions, traveling about 75 mph. At that point, I didn't use my cruise for a long time, experiencing no further problems, until, in June 2021, on the interstate, the same thing happened. I have NEVER had a problem unless the cruise was on, AND I have travelled for over an hour or two at consistent high speeds.
The dealer ran a diagnostic, saying the problem was my transmission had overheated and I needed a new one. In addition, they said if they install the transmission, they will install an external cooler fan to keep the new one from overheating! I asked why we need an external fan if the transmission is new, and was told this was a precaution. Then when I asked if Nissan would repair/partially pay for the repair, since it was a prevalent problem, the service tech intimated that it was my fault because even though I had kept it serviced faithfully, I hadn't brought it to them for every oil change, etc.
The repair was going to be charged at $5805.
2 Additional Facts: 1. After reading Nissan Rogue 2015 problems reported, this has been an ongoing problem for several years and every situation has reported dealers requiring an external cooler. This is widely accepted as a design issue, but Nissan won't issue a recall or help owners with the problem they caused.
2. When I entered the repair cost in the info on this complaint, this website, carcomplaints.com, put up a red flag with a message saying this repair cost was way too high for this issue and to be sure I didn't inflate the cost or they wouldn't allow me to register complaints! Kind of tells us that this cost is unreasonable....I DID NOT inflate it. I have the estimate in front of me.
Last Thing: I bought this car to drive in my retirement, planning to keep it for 10+ years, because of the Nissan reputation from years past. I won't buy another from Nissan. I am so disappointed in their product, their lack of integrity, their refusal to stand behind their mistakes and their service department. .
