This stiff steering at highway speeds is a designed condition. Reported as giving the driver more feel for the road and enhance fuel economy.
The speed sensitive electric assist power steering works very well at slow speeds, but at highway speed it is more like old time power steering when the engine stalled and you coast to the side of the road hanging on to the steering wheel with both hands and hope you don't have to do a quick maneuver.
My problem is, that I have to squeeze the steering wheel so tight to make those constant miniscule corrections that normal driving dictates, that after I drive this car for a few hours or a couple hundred miles, my hands ache.
If I can't figure some way to solve this problem I will have to get rid of the car and suffer a big loss on trade in value because it is only 7 months old.
