My story is like the others. On vacation, opened the lift gate, heard a pop and the power strut had popped the ball joint off the bracket. Rusted so bad I couldn't remove the ball from the socket. Had to by a new strut and bracket at a cost of $1200 CDN. Dealer said the struts were discontinued but there was another listed at twice the price. ($1000 vs $500). Not under warrantee or recall. This is ridiculous for a 5 year old vehicle! Last Nissan I will ever buy!

I purchased my vehicle (used, at 95k) and six days later, I heard a pop and the hatch strut had rusted out and popped off. Almost six months later Nissan says the part is still on back order and recommends replacing both sides (I am not sure if the computer is also recommended to be replaced) but apparently the cost of the part (per side) has gone up from $500 to over a grand. So now I have to load everything through the side door of my SUV that I purchased to use as a work truck, to haul all my gear, every day for work. Inconvenient and very frustrating.

The exact same issue happened to me as described by Dave H. I didn't take a photo but it looks identical with the exact same rust. I will update this with a photo later.

Hit the close button made it half way down and just snapped. I will be contacting the dealer tomorrow. This car is a POS. I have had over $5k worth of issues not to mention the ones that were actually covered. I will never buy a Nissan again.

hatch strut mount rusted out

On vacation with the family, I pressed the auto hatch close button and heard something pop and realized that the strut had released from it's mount on the vehicle - not the hatch-side mounted point.

Upon further inspection, the mounting pin from the bottom of the strut had rusted off and snapped.

This is really an exterior piece that is exposed to the elements so the material they use should not rust out.

I thought- "OK well I'll just buy a new strut and replace it".

Not so easy- Nissan dealer said that I need to replace the entire computer that operates the auto back hatch and both struts!!!!!- Cost- $2000!!! For a piece that shouldn't have rusted in the first place. NISSAN QUALITY again. Dealer said there has been no recall- so tough luck. I can't even get the hatch to open. Counting down the days 'til my lease expires so I never have to do business with Nissan dealers or their customer DIS-service.
