While on the tollway, engine light came on and the car went into neutral. Was able to get off the tollway and eventually drive home. Transmission required full replacement. The three quotes were $5500-7000. Every transmission specialist we called would not guarantee the work of the CVT transmission and we have been advised to avoid ALL cars with this type of transmission. The car was valued at $5500, so we sold the car.

Error code P1778 CVT step motor function problem. Part not serviceable by Nissan (but people replace them with a $30 part). Dealer quoted $6300 to replace CVT. Independent shop ballpark estimate $5000. Not worth the cost to replace.

Murano Platinum 3.5L V6

  • CVT transmission
  • 80,000 miles

The transmission completely failed with no warning. The car is only 5 years old and Is very well cared for. I came to a stop sign and it began slipping, with never a warning light ever coming on. The warranty had expired at 60,000 miles, and the entire transmission had to be replaced because Nissan does not make parts available for repair of these transmissions. When we complained it to Nissan, they refused to help with the replacement of the transmission. I have a Honda and over 15 years it has never needed a new transmission. For this to fall with no warning at such a low mileage is outrageous. And the fact that these transmissions cannot be repaired, and have to be entirely replaced, is also outrageous. I will never buy a Nissan ever again.
