I got several panicked call from my wife over the past two years of her telling me the car would not start. Not start meaning press the button, nothing happens. Owners manual would indicate a steering lock issue with instructions to turn the wheel back and forth.
Originally she was not aware what was happening. I would arrive and the car would start. We would have the dealer look over the car and they said it looked ok. The third time this happened I had it towed and the dealer reported that the steering column lock hd failed. Replacement cost was $1,100.
I talked to Nissan as they extended the warranty for this exact same problem on Maxima and Altima but not for the Murano's. This should not be a wear and tear part and it is well know in the Nissan community that this is problematic.
Dealers are aware but will only replace this on failure and not for an intermittent problem.
Not a happy Nissan owner and this will be the last Nissan product we ever own.
Not the cost issue as it is a reliability issue and failure of Nissan to notify the consumer that you could be stranded at any moment with a problem that a road rescue team could not fix.
