On January 17th while driving 35 mph on city streets the battery light and the brake light came on at the same time. This identical symptom had occurred a month before. At that time I took the car to a repair shop where they checked the battery, the charging circuit, the brake fluid level and the brake pad thickness and found nothing wrong. They cleaned and greased the terminal connections on the battery. When they reconnected the battery the warning lights both disappeared.
I considered the previous experience a false alarm so when it happened this time I ignored it. Both lights stayed on. Yesterday while again driving on city streets the vehicle lost power. The engine continued to run at idle but the transmission was disengaged. I was able to roll off the main thoroughfare on to a side street and park. Had vehicle towed to repair shop.
Repair shop charged the battery and determined the alternator was not producing a charge. Took the alternator to a repair shop and they advised it was "Fried" and advised the vehicle had something more serious going on that "killed" the alternator. This vehicle has been well cared for and not abused. I'm wondering if the computer has a "self destruct" feature but I see similar Muranos with higher mileage.
