Stopped at a stop sign, proceeded to go when it was my turn. Traveled about 50 feet from the intersection and heard, what is best described as a gun shot sound. The vehicle lost all drive power. I was able to pull it to the side of the road. Got out of the car and I was able to follow a trail of gear oil back to pieces of the rear carrier. After a bit police and fire showed up because people had called thinking it was a gun shot. Luckily it had happened later in the day and traffic was almost non-existent. I had exited the freeway about 10 min before the failure.
Nissan Service Manual states that the rear carrier should be check for the first time at 150,000 miles. It failed at just over 130,000. The shop that I took it to said that it "blows up" like it did because of a faulty design where the rear part of the carrier connects to the frame.
I don't have pictures anymore but the whole housing cracked all the way around in 2 places and the the middle section had spun 45* and locked up the rear axles. If it were to have blown up on the freeway I could have been seriously injured or killed. Not to mention anybody else that was around the car when it happened, since it lost power, lost pieces of the housing, and the large puddle of gear oil left behind on the road.
