The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Murano. While driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle exhibited an abnormal cracking noise from the front end. The contact then noticed smoke coming from under the hood. The cpntact pulled over and shut the engine off. The contact then noticed the transfer case was fractured and the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop where the contact was told that the transfer case was fractured and leaking fluids. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 146,00 and the current mileage is 147,000. Updated 03/22/11 updated 11/16/11

Transfer case in Murano '04- we recently had a new transfer case put in our Murano as it was deemed out of warranty. It is evident that exact problem has happened to many owners regarding the same part in Murano's nationwide. While Nissan North America has issued extended warranties to all their cvt driven vehicles, they have come short in covering this component which is a mechanical part to cvt transmission. The cost for our repair was over $3000. Needless to say this causes a major safety concern since the vehicle tends to stall and can become inoperable at any speed. Updated IVOQ 05/26/10

I have been told by the Nissan dealer that my transfer case needed to be replaced. It locked up when I was in the all-wheel drive mode over 50 mph. They initially told me this was a problem which has been addressed in new models but they were unwilling to consider a recall even though it leads to freeze-ups while being driven. Blogs clearly show that hundreds of written in regarding this issue with the 2003 and 2004 Muranos. I paid over $5,500 and now have additional transmission issues just a few months later.

At 67,000 miles the transfer case of my 04 AWD Murano cracked. As a result a control panel and switch were also damaged. Grand total to repair $4200. Only event leading up to the failure was a clicking or slapping sound 3 days previous to the part completely failing. I thought that the noise was related to my recent tire rotation initially and the car completely broke down on the way to the repair shop. Website poll with 43% of people responding that they had problems with this part referred me to this site.

Multiple problems - transmission leak & replacement; transfer case replacement; rotors out of round @8200 miles and cut; now brakes do not have easy stop (ie for in traffic) only middle pedal and hard stop but dealer says they are w/in spec but admit that spec is subjective to my truck vs "others"; elec cable to airbag twisted & replaced, ac not charged 2X (after engine dropped to replace tranny), truck does not start all the time (current problem). Others -I'm sure there's just been too many to remember. Basically dealer has touched every major component of my truck except the rear end. Call to discuss details if needed.
