CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2004-2006 Nissan Maxima has widespread transmission problems. It starts with the vehicle jerking when shifting, & progresses to full-blown transmission failure.

Maxima owners report spending $3,000 to replace the transmission, typically around when the odometer hits 100,000 miles.

There's a class action lawsuit filed in late 2011, & it is still in the "discovery" stage. Apparently, these things take time ... far too much time.

Bought 2005 Nissan Maximum at CarMax in Inglewood, within two weeks, transmission starting slipping. Brought the car back to CarMax for the problem and was told that I couldn't just show up for service. While arguing with management on the why not, I noticed others having problems of the same issue and timing belt. I was told to leave it and they would call me when the vehicle was ready.

Never received a call to pick up the vehicle, just came and got it and was told the problem was resolved. I was told by one of the mechanics that my car had stayed parked most of the day until maybe an hour before I picked it up. Problem continued, taking it back and forth and finally was told that the problem has nothing to do with my warranty, take it up with Nissan and that got me nowhere.

It got so bad, that I decided to trade it in for a 2012 Maximum while I could get some value out of the trade and was told by Power Nissan where I brought my 2012 Maximum that there was problem with the transmission in the 2005 Maximum and was noted early on. Lemon!!! Waste of my money, beautiful on the outside, but horrible in the inside. This issue was passed on to the buyer without knowledge. My mechanic let me know that it would cost at least $5,000 or more for a new transmission. That a down payment on a new car. Felt used and suckered right off the bat.

Maxima 3.2L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 98,254 miles

Transmission changes gears erratically and slips after car runs long enough for the transmission oil to get hot. My wife was looking for a new car to replace her old Pacifica (2005) and I suggested that she not even consider a Nissan. She bought a Toyota. I have another complaint about this car which I will post seperately.
