CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2004-2006 Nissan Maxima has widespread transmission problems. It starts with the vehicle jerking when shifting, & progresses to full-blown transmission failure.

Maxima owners report spending $3,000 to replace the transmission, typically around when the odometer hits 100,000 miles.

There's a class action lawsuit filed in late 2011, & it is still in the "discovery" stage. Apparently, these things take time ... far too much time.

The car has a sound as if it were metal fatigue in the front of the hood a hard blow sounds loud every time the car moves from one side to the other they have not been able to find the problem they say what is a factory defect I am afraid that it is a metal that is under fatigue and the engine falls on the ground running on the street.

The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Maxima. While driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle drove roughly when the accelerator pedal was depressed. There were no warning indicators illuminated. While driving on an incline or bumpy road, the vehicle would shake. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The control arm and ball joints on the front driver and passenger sides were recently replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

My 2005 Nissan Maxima has 96000 miles and does this jerk shift between 20-30 mph. It started a about a year ago and every time I take in to service they tell me nothing is wrong. I just took it again for transmission check and they told me that everything is okay. I welcome any feedback as to the best course of action to correct these intermittent and random symptoms that include: 1. takes about 5 seconds to click into gear after the shift lever is put in "D" 2. very hard jerky shifts between 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 1st and accompanied by loud clunking noise. 3. transmission slips out of gear during regular driving allowing the engine to rev freely then jerking back into gear with a loud clunk. The is followed by a burnt oil / electrical type smell that gets inside the car and evident outside after stopping. Sometimes I go for days with no symptoms at all and other times it may happen a dozen times in a day. I drive mainly on the freeways in southern California and have maintained and babied this car since it was new. This is my first Nissan and I have loved this card until these symptoms.

I have had my 2005 Nissan Maxima for almost 3 years. Purchased it from used car dealership. The first year I had it, I had to get a transmission. I purchased a transmission for about 3000, and still having the same problem as before. The car is really nice except for the transmission. I found out I am not the only one complaining. I had taken it to several transmission places for them to look at it, but they all say these cars have that problem, and they think it should be a recall on these vehicle for that reason. Please help. I do not want to purchase another car, but I have to have transportation.

Car has 41K miles. Was taken to the dealer 4 times for a shimmy and vibration when driving over 55 mph. 3 times balanced and aligned tires. 4th time was told all 4 rims are bent and need to be replaced. Unable to get accurate information on warranty from dealer nor Nissan.

Bought Nissan Maxima 2005 in March of 2005. Started with shaking steering wheel from 55 mph and above. Took it back several times to premium Nissan, new rochelle. Replaced brakes, rotors, struts, rims and tyres. Also body repairs like swaying rear fender and vibrating heat shield in engine. Still have shaking problems, cannot rotate tyres and speed balanced over 7 times and no solution. Lost BBB arbitration and Consumer Affairs hearing. On 3/7/07 took for service and Nissan did recalls to rear suspension ABS and child seat anchors. They rotated the tyres and now the car pulls to the left and the right on rough roads (total nightmare).
