CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2004-2006 Nissan Maxima has widespread transmission problems. It starts with the vehicle jerking when shifting, & progresses to full-blown transmission failure.
Maxima owners report spending $3,000 to replace the transmission, typically around when the odometer hits 100,000 miles.
There's a class action lawsuit filed in late 2011, & it is still in the "discovery" stage. Apparently, these things take time ... far too much time.

Car only has 76k easy miles. The timing mechanism should not be going out yet!
Update from Aug 18, 2015: Problem turned out to be the timing chain tensioner (s). Good thing I replaced them when I did. One of them had about two millimeters before it went. When the do go.... you can kiss your engine goodbye. Nissan is aware of the problem but has no intention of helping customers or resolving the issue.. Talked with Nissan customer service and was told very politely that "problems like this could be expected in a car of my year and mileage" Really. I almost blew my engine at 76k!! That is to be "expected" ? Love to see that in the next Nissan commercial. Did some other things to the engine (water pump ,tune up , hoses) since the car was completely torn apart. In total spent over $1700. Never again Nissan. Toyota next....
