I was on a camping trip using four wheel drive (as I have for years). After coming down a mountain trail, I properly came to a complete stop, turned the dial from 4lo to 2 wheel drive and waited for the dash light to inform me that 4x4 was disengaged. Light went off, I positioned the shifter into "drive" and attempted to move forward. My truck did not move, yet the rear tires spun freely. I then attempted reverse in which I successfully reversed for about ten feet. I then began to drive foward and noticed a tick like sound coming from the front undercaraige. After about fifty feet of around 10 mph my whole front differential blew. Split the casing from top to bottom. I dont know what could have caused this since I follow propper use of the four wheel drive and have never had any problems with my 99 Frontier. I spoke to Nissan and they would not cover the differential because i was a thousand miles over warranty. A brand new diff was priced out to be around $1,500 and the cheapest used with 45,000 miles was around $500. What I'm getting at.... Has anyone else experienced problems like this or am I just an unfortunate person who purchased the lemon of the bunch? I have yet to replace the front diff and am now learning about transmission/radiatior problems... GRRRRRRR! I stood my my Nissans since 99 and always spoke highly of them. Friends are Toyota owners and now they have plenty of reasoning when they say "Should have bought a Toy."
