My husband's car (Nissan Frontier Crew Cab) has a fuel tank that is corroded right through on the top- the fuel tank is poorly designed. There is a 'gully' on top where water collects-the water then 'sits' there, causing the corrosion. My husband is a mechanical engineer who specializes in metals; he also fixes all of our cars, is knowledgeable about mechanics. He thinks this is clearly a design problem-the result of a poor design. Truck has 190,000 miles. The problem is just occurring now because he always had the Tonneau cover and/or crew cab attachment on, until last year. Tonneau cover rotted through, and when the crew cab attachment is on the truck bed, you cannot see when backing up. Now, the water that falls into the flatbed is more likely to drip through to the gas tank. Why would they design an area where water can get 'trapped' on top of the fuel tank? Especially knowing that this vehicle can be driven without a cover?? Very expensive to replace the fuel tank. Was this a recall? It seems there are MANY other reports of this SAME problem!!!
