CarComplaints.com Notes: You don't want to get 2009 and 2010 Altima owners started about their cars. That is, unless, you know how to start their cars.
These vehicles can suddenly become impossible to start thanks to a faulty electronic steering column lock (ESCL). Nissan dealers will gladly replace it, but that will run you $1000.
More info & videos about the Nissan ESCL defect are available over at NissanProblems.com.
It's one of the many reasons this car was named CarTalk's Turd of the Week and given our Beware of this Clunker badge. Two dubious honors.

I have been driving for over 25 years and have owned 7 cars before this Nissan Altima 2010, approx. 143000 kms. In the past I have driven my Camry for over 270000 kms with few issues. Pontiac for over 220000 km etc. I have to admit this 2010 Altima has been the worst ever. Will NEVER BUY this brand again.
While driving on highway, the car failed to go beyond 80 Km/Hr when I should have been at 100. Thankfully aN exit was close by and I got out from highway. My house was close so drove back a few kms under stop and go traffic, the car would not pick speed.
Took it to the dealership, they kept the car for several days. Charged $1500 and still could not find the reason. Kept insisting it is not the transmission but my engine will need replacement ($4000-$5000 cost). Since I could not spend any more, took it to a garage. The mechanics laughed when I told my story. They mentioned a few others with the similar story. They found the problem within minutes and told my exhaust was actually blocked/broken from inside, choking the engine. Spent another $1200 on parts and labour. Car has been driving fine ever.
I called back the dealership and they mentioned, they need to take a few pics and would refund some of my money. So I took it back, spent half and hour and was told, they would call back. Nothing ever since. It's been two weeks. I called them in between.
HORRIBLE SERVICE AT NISSAN WITH INCOMPETENT MECHANICS .
