CarComplaints.com Notes: You don't want to get 2009 and 2010 Altima owners started about their cars. That is, unless, you know how to start their cars.

These vehicles can suddenly become impossible to start thanks to a faulty electronic steering column lock (ESCL). Nissan dealers will gladly replace it, but that will run you $1000.

More info & videos about the Nissan ESCL defect are available over at NissanProblems.com.

It's one of the many reasons this car was named CarTalk's Turd of the Week and given our Beware of this Clunker badge. Two dubious honors.

My car was locked out for 6 months due to anti theft device malfunctioning. While Nissan said it would be thousands to fix my computer, my guy eventually found a way to just remove the fuse so the car thinks its always off. So that happened and my floor below driver side feet is soaking wet when it rains. There are wet stains on my interior and my floorboard under driver side has a hole in it, which I assume will soon turn to rusted hole in floorboard. Finally my service engine soon light came on and error code P1778 is the issue. Car stalls before going into gear. I'm terrified I will need a new transmission. Seems completely unfair

faulty door plugs

Hello,

I own a 2009 Nissan Altima bought with only 13 miles from a dealership in NJ. When i first bought the car a few months into owning it, i noticed that water kept getting trapped in the front passenger door panel. At that time even though it was odd, i never took it to dealership because I was afraid of paying more money for repairs. Couldn’t afford that on a single mother salary. However, a few years down the line 2017, the water keeps leaking inside the car front passenger and back passenger floors!! I've done some research and i see that many other people are having the same issue as me. I've tried 'cleaning the plugs’ with a professional as well as running water on the car to see where the issue is; and it just keeps happening. This is an issue with this model, factory problem that Nissan it’s not recognizing, not anything the owner can or has done wrong. I believe this issue should be a recall that would be the right thing to do.

I've had many other cars Chevy, Honda and this is the first time something like this happens. It's very strange! Unfortunately, can't buy another car now because I'm paying for an MBA. I would love to keep my car for longer since it is a great car overall, great mileage. For now I guess I would have to fork the bill and get some kind of fix on it, not sure if that would help at all. Please help, at least by documenting this issue and investigating further. There are a lot of people out there with the same issue, they have even made youtube videos on how to try to tackle the water leaking problem.

Update from Jan 28, 2017: Took the car to BayRidge Nissan in Brooklyn, NY. They diagnose the car as clogged plugs and drain hose came off. $500 dollars, they "fixed" it, i'll update later if it's truly fixed. However, they broke my glove box and they don't want to fix it.

Update from May 26, 2017: Update: May 2017 after this complaint, Paid $518 to fix the problem but it came back. After a lot of rain in NYC the passenger front floor has water sipping through. Maybe the plugs are clogged, but still, i've never heard of any car having this recurring issue.

Overall I like my car, never had any real problems with it, but every time it rains here in San Antonio, TX (which is not very often) there is water coming into my car and I'm not sure where it's coming from. I've taken it to the car agency where I bought it and supposedly they have done different things to fix it. They are saying it's coming from the sunroof, which they said they have replaced the sealant and the second time they said they just fixed something that moved when I opened the sunroof. After the second time I took it in, I have not opened the sunroof with fear that the problem would happen again, but it rained last night and it happened again. So hopefully they can find the problem and I wonder if there is anyone out there with the same problem. Thank you.
