CarComplaints.com Notes: You don't want to get 2009 and 2010 Altima owners started about their cars. That is, unless, you know how to start their cars.

These vehicles can suddenly become impossible to start thanks to a faulty electronic steering column lock (ESCL). Nissan dealers will gladly replace it, but that will run you $1000.

More info & videos about the Nissan ESCL defect are available over at NissanProblems.com.

It's one of the many reasons this car was named CarTalk's Turd of the Week and given our Beware of this Clunker badge. Two dubious honors.

I plastered Nissan all over Facebook, InstaGram and Twitter. They also reached out via Facebook and stated they couldn't do anymore than what was already mentioned in my case number. My case number is still open. This needs to be recalled just like Toyota and Lexus did in the past. Casey told my mom that she was calling to tell her that Nissan will not be repairing the 'Melting Dashboard'. I'm waiting to speak with her supervisor. I'm also mailing letters into HQ.

Dash became very tacky approximately 4years ago to the point that you can no longer wipe clean as everything sticks to it. If you touch with finger nail it leaves a permanent indentation and the dash remains under your nail. Very Very annoying. I just heard today that Toyota had a similar problem and they covered replacement.

The 2009 Nissan is great to look at but the dash has been melting down and the smell is so bad that I can't get in the car on hot days as that a trick when you live in Fla. You can't clean the front window because the dash is pure glue and you get that chemical all over your arms and don't drop anything on it cause it stick like adhesives, which the glue seems to be around the pattern of the dash shape. shines in your eyes when driving we are having trouble driving with this reflecting. Not healthy and I have trouble breathing in that car and we don't smoke. If you touch it by accident with your fingernail it's all under your nail tips . We bought two nissans 08 09 and this 09 is the worst ever. They should fixs this problem not healthy. We all could get it tested for what is melting on the dash but there and answer. Has anyone had a testing on the chemical which is ozzing from the dash? We all know this isn't healthy and there getting away with it.

I have a 2009 Altima with 25000 miles and the dashboard is melting. Nissan refuses to replace it. They have poor customer service. The regional manager I was speaking to hung up on me.

Nissan refused to replace mine because it is out of warranty. They are currently involved in a Class Action suit that goes to trial this summer. This is not an isolated problem. There are many reports of the 2008 and 2009 years with this issue. It is truly a safety problem. The dash gets so shiny that when driving into the sun you cannot see. Nissan as well as the other Japanese auto makers are fully aware of the substandard dashboards. Toyota stepped up and extended the warrantee on both the Toyota and Lexus brands. Nissan refuses to do anything unless they lose the class action suit and even then I fully expect them to drag their feet. The dealer I took my car to for the inspection wished me luck but basically said Nissan Corporate will do nothing to help you. They said they see the melting dash issue all the time here in South Florida. http://www.wftv.com/news/action-9/action-9-melting-dashboards-causing-safety-issues-for-drivers/155341084

I noticed it was sticky and shiny, I did some research and realized it was and is currently melting. It causes a glare while driving, it will be serious and will cause an accident I'm sure. I went to the dealer who acknowledged it is melting and he contacted nissan higher up who said I'm responsible for it. So now I have two on line complaints filed, an in person complaint, and I have been e mailing with corporate Nissan as well. This needs to be replaced by Nissan immediately.

Melting dashboard and glare is very dangerous for driver and passengers and anything or anybody outside of the car since this causes driver not to see clearly! My husband took car into place we bought it from (Jim Burke Nissan) and they said no recall, no fix and they have not had any other cars brought in with this problem! Not too helpful! This is definitely a defect on Nissan's part! They should step up and be responsible for their (way) below par product before someone has a fatal accident!

I have never heard of a dashboard melting, my car has been garaged, also this is a very expensive problem to have when you paid a fortune for the car in the first place. Once you get the car paid off they want you to buy a new one because they don't make cars that last any longer.
