CarComplaints.com Notes: You don't want to get 2009 and 2010 Altima owners started about their cars. That is, unless, you know how to start their cars.

These vehicles can suddenly become impossible to start thanks to a faulty electronic steering column lock (ESCL). Nissan dealers will gladly replace it, but that will run you $1000.

More info & videos about the Nissan ESCL defect are available over at NissanProblems.com.

It's one of the many reasons this car was named CarTalk's Turd of the Week and given our Beware of this Clunker badge. Two dubious honors.

I cannot believe that I have had so many problems with this 2009 vehicle. It's been awful. The transmission failed, the a/c hasn't worked in 4 years, and I haven't been able to use the cruise control in over 6 years. It's an absolutely horrible car... and possibly manufacturer.

The A/C should never go out on a vehicle that soon. I've never had a vehicle that has performed or been this absolutely awful to drive. What a money pit!!

My first Nissan and no complaints until today. The air compressor doesn't work properly. The mechanic explained to me there are a lot of Nissans with the same issues. Magnetic part of the compressor doesn't work. It's hard to find the part and the cost is around $200 plus installation. I can't believe a car with 90,000 miles needs a new compressor.

Took my car to the dealership where I had purchased it new. After paying $50, I was told there was no evidence of a leak and it passed the leak test. Recommended I have coolant replaced. Checked elsewhere for prices and paid $180. This summer it is not working again.

This is the 3rd issue I have had-car suddenly and unexpectedly not starting but Nissan replaced the steering lock and ignition switch under an extended warranty. This happened in January on a winter evening. Thank goodness I was in the city and not out on some country road, stranded. Nissan knew it was a problem but did not issue a recall. Shame on this business! Also the driver's side window does not work properly. Nissan wanted $500 to fix it but it was a recall in the 07s. Have not had it fixed. This will be my first and only Nissan. I will trade it in before the end of the summer, even though it has only 80000 kms.

Recently I started hearing a rattling noise in my car and noticed I only heard it when I had the ac on. I parked my car and turned the ac on so I can check exactly where it was coming from and my car shut off. I took it to a mechanic so they can see what is going on with the car and they tell me I need a new ac compressor. The extended warranty does not want to cover it because they believe it's just the ac compressor clutch that needs to be replaced. I've looked this up and saw I'm not the only one with this issue. 700 dollars will be coming out of my pocket to replace this because I'm scared if I keep driving the car with a damaged ac compressor it will shut off on me in the middle of me driving.

I purchased a 2009 Nissan Altima in 2009. The car came with an air compressor. In May 2013, the air compressor stopped working. I had the air compressor replaced in May 2013 at a Nissan Dealership for $900.00. In September 2013, the air compressor went out again. I had the air compressor replaced in September 2013 at a Nissan dealership. I have not used my air condition system in the Nissan since September 2014. When I went to turn it on on March 15, 2015, the air compressor was not working and was blowing out hot air. I went to a Nissan dealership on March 16, 2015. The dealership said that I need another air compressor and it will cost me $1,114.06. This is just unbelievable! Why would a 2009 Nissan Altima need four air compressors over a 5 year period. Why would I need to pay more money when obviously there is a problem either with Nissan air compressors or with the Nissan Altima vehicle. The life of a Nissan Altima air compressor appears to be a couple of months but definitely less than a year.

Update from Mar 19, 2015: The first air compressor went out at $62,000 miles. The car now has $90,000 miles.

Update from Mar 20, 2015: Also, when I took the car to the Nissan dealership on March 16, 2015 and they quoted me the $1,114.06 price, I told them they should fix it for free because apparently there is a problem with the air compressor. They connected some wire after I said this and said the air is blowing from the wire connection but I still needed a new air compressor. They said the air may last one day or it may last the entire summer. Guess what, they were right, the air lasted one day. The air went back out on March 17, 2015. There appears to be a problem with the air compressors and electrical problems with 2009 Nissan Altimas.

I purchased a 2009 Nissan Altima in 2009 from a Nissan dealership. The car came with a working air compressor. In May 2013, the air compressor was no longer working and the cooling system was blowing hot air. I took the car to a Nissan dealership in May 2013 and had the air compressor replaced for $900.00. The car had about 60,000 miles at that time. In September 2013, the air compressor stopped working and I had to have a third air compressor put into the car. The work was done at a Nissan dealership in September 2013. I have not used the air cooling system since September 2014.

On March 15, 2015 the air cooling system was blowing out hot air when I turned it on. I took the car to a Nissan dealership on March 15, 2015 and the dealership said that I need another air compressor for $1,114.06. This is unbelievable! Why would a 2009 Nissan Altima need four air compressors during a 5-year period? I am at a lost for what to do because another air compressor will go out probably sometime between two months and a year. I only use the cooling system during the summer months. Is the life span of Nissan air compressors just a couple of months????!!!

I have a 2009 Nissan Altima that I purchased used at Wolfchase Nissan Dealership in Bartlett, TN. The car is a piece of CRAP!!!!! In December 2013, the dealership said the head gasket needed replacing and I about fell out. This is my 3rd Nissan, the first two I purchased brand new and this one I purchased used.NEVER had ANY major work done on the new cars. Fortunately, Nissan paid for the head gasket. On March 13, 2014, I took the car in for new brakes and told them my a/c wasn't cooling. They tell me that I need a new a/c compressor. CAN YOU SAY PISSED. The car is less than 5 years old. I will say it was previously owned by a rental car facility but the salesman at Wolfchase said there was 1 previous owner. The rental facility put 30k miles on the car so I was misinformed of the 1 previous owner. More like 100+ previous owners (individual renters). I spoke with the dealership manager and he was RUDE to say the least. He knows it isn't normal for a compressor to stop working on a less than 5 year old car. He also knows that the car is a piece of crap to say the least. I'm totally pissed at 2 major repair jobs on a car less than 5 years old and as much as I live the Nissan brand I'm seriously considering never driving one again. I'm so happy I ran across this site and your issues. This is definitely a bought lesson and I'll ask 50,000 questions before I purchase another car.

the AC on my 2009 nissan altima was working great - u coulda hung meat in it without any fear of it spoiling. this was on a thursday afternoon - got in the car on friday morning to run some errands prior to leaving on vacation that saturday - no AC whatsoever! that was a pain because i had no time to get it fixed & we had to take the other car which had AC but it was pretty anemic. got back home about a week later and took it back to where i bought it (used) & great news!! they said that it was 100% covered under the extended warranty that i had purchased with the car. i then took it to the local nissan dealer & the first thing that they did was to come up with over $300 worth of stuff that 'wasn't covered under my extended warranty'. WTH?? took it to the next nearest nissan dealer 50 miles away & 100% of the cost (less my $50 deductible) was covered. this is my second nissan and i loved both of them but i really don't think that i would buy another one due to the local dealer (Legacy Nissan, London, KY, USA).

Bought the 2009 Altima brand new... 6 miles on it. Nothing but problems since. Battery had to be replaced and still continues to corrode weekly. Transmission sounds like a diesel truck and the AC compressor now goes out. Really Nissan!!!
