My 1999 Nissan Atima has been kept well maintained from the beginning. However, at 80,800 miles the timing chain tensioner broke and the the chain came loose. When consulted with Nissan the cost was estimated to be $2,300 and the warranty was over. So I got it fixed at an independent mechanical shop for $1,359. The timing chain is suppposed to function properly up to 200K miles even though the warranty expires at 60K miles. I contacted Nissan and reported a manufacturing defect on the timing chain and requested some financial assistance but they refused to do anything. It appears that Nissan does not want to take responsibility for their manufcaturing defect. I even contacted the Nissan headquarters in Japan, but they just disregarded my complaint.
