2013 Mitsubishi RVR in Canada or Outlander Sport in US. Was told the dealership was trying to build a case about the paint bubbling in this location on many RVR's. Service guy told me it is an issue with a welded joint just below and the water is getting into it. Said they wouldn't fix until you can poke a tooth pick thru it. Which seems silly due to the fact it would be a minor fix at a body shop. He said once you can poke the tooth pick thru they will replace the whole hatch, he said just give it time and it will have to be replaced. So if you are noticing paint bubbling on your rear hatch or underneath near the hatch latch, let the dealership know, the more people that do the more likely that Mitsu will do something about it.
Update from Nov 2, 2020: Well Mitsubishi never did fix the paint issue which turned into a rust thru issue. The hatch can't be fixed and must be replaced at my cost. There is a TSB on this very issue with the 2013-2015 Mitsu's Outlander Sport and RVR here in Canada. I feel if it is a known problem that Mitsubishi was deficient in then they should fix it, but they won't. So if you are buying a car to last, then I think another brand is the way to go.
