Outlander 2.4L 4 - cyl

The car was driving fine. There were never any issues or warnings. Suddenly while being trying to move ahead to a stop sign after being at a complete stop behind another vehicle, the car did not want to accelerate/move. After making people go around me and having hazard lights on for about a minute, I managed to pull the car over very slowly. I parked, checked oils, they were fine, and shut off car for a few minutes. I restart the car which had no warning lights featured and it started to drive fine. However, within 10 mins of driving it suddenly decelerated and lost power after a loud revving sound the car did on its own. I had no prior indicator nor warning light as to having any transmission issues. Car had to be towed as it will not drive.

I restarted it today and added transmission oil (the car now showed low on dipstick, when yesterday it showed it was fine on oil). When I restarted the vehicle before adding oil it now decides to show Transmission service required on dash. The light went off after oil was added but the car still does not drive on any gear and now has check engine light on. I love Outlanders as this is my third, and the only and first time I've had any issues. Does anyone know what would cause this to happen as it seems as though the transmission "went" without any prior indication or warning light of failure?

Outlander ES 4 WD 4 cyl

  • CVT transmission
  • 145,000 miles

Bought this great SUV as the second owner in 2016 with little over 100k miles. It was the best bang for my buck. The power was a bit lacking, but it got good mileage for what I needed. I was about to embark on a trip when I got about 40 miles from home and the RPMS went from 2300 to 6000 in cruise control without any acceleration. I took it out of cruise control and started to lose power. There was a slight smoking/ burning smell on the exhaust manifold and the transmission fluid had turned grey. I tried to get it back home and couldn't exceed 10 MPH and check engine light came on- had to have it towed. When I got home the car would start but when I pushed the gas no acceleration at all.

Took it to a reputable transmission shop and they drained the trans fluid and said it was contaminated with metal from something inside the transmission. They said it was beyond repair and also couldn't repair cause they don't sell parts needed which left me with two options- find a used transmission or a new one. They quoted me 10,000 plus labor for a new one since neither I nor them could find a used one within a reasonable distance from here. Really sad and irritated that I'm left with a dead car and sh*t options for fixing it
