With only 13,000 on my 2006 Mini and while it was still under warranty, the gears wouldn't immediately engage upon starting the car. When they would finally engage, the car would lurch either forward or backward. Mini was aware of this problem with the 2002 - 2006 CVT transmissions, but rather than fully fix the problem, they readjusted adapters (?), which held the transmission over for another 8 - 9 months, after it went out of warranty. Then, at approximately 35,000 miles, the same problem occurred. After Mini having me spend $400 for them to rule out other problems, they told me I needed a new transmission. Upon researching this issue, I found it is not an uncommon problem. Mini acted like they were being generous to me by offering to pay 50% of the $7,000 (!) cost. That is $3500 I am to put into a car that just went out of warranty -- for a problem the company has known about. The car came with a defective transmission.
