While braking, the consumer discovered the pedals were designed too close together, which caused the consumer to depress the brake/accelerator pedal at the same time, which caused the consumer to have an accident. The dealership was notified, but the problem was not resolved.

Petition to open an immediate investigation into why the Mercury Sable has excessive movement of the brake pedal, she owns a 2000 Mercury Sable with a defective brake pedal & airbags. The vehicle is equipped with an adjustable brake and gas pedal system which was recalled for the spacing between the pedals. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they indicated that the vehicle needed no adjustment. One day the driver was turning into a parking space when the vehicle suddenly accelerated onto a grassy median and hit a light pole. The vehicle came to rest after hitting a vehicle head on. The air bags did not deploy and both occupants were injured. On inspection of the car it was noted that the brake pedal had excessive side to side movement. The manufacturer indicated this was a normal condition.

While parking my vehicle I stepped on the brake and the car took off like it was possessed. It went up onto a grassy median ran head on into and over a light pole and came to rest after hitting a parked car head on. The brakes did not stop the car and the air bags did not deploy!! the car had been taken in for a recall on the adjustable brake and gas pedal earlier in the year and I was told no adjustment was necessary. So far it has been found that our brake pedal has too much play on it (in other words it moves side to side to much--is loose?) the adjustable brake and gas pedal and the air bags not deploying are issues that must be addressed by Ford on this vehicle.

On several occasions, when consumer hits the brake pedal he simultaneously hits the gas pedal, although dealer said it was pedal fade, consumer feels both pedals are too close together due to the fact that his foot is not in the middle of the brake pedal, instead hitting the gas pedal; consumer has to make a conscious effort to move foot to the middle but on rare occasions consumer can still hit the gas pedal but know to move his foot fast.

Vehicle seemed to speed up when the brakes were applied, pressed harder on the brake pedal and the vehicle got even faster, vehicle glanced off the curb and proceeded across the intersection into the opposit curb. Resulting in damage. Cause of the problem is the brake/gas pedal are too close to each other, also the pedal attachment assembly on these adjustable pedals is such a loose fit that when the brake pedal is depressed, the driver foot can stray to the right end of the pedal and the foot will pick up the gas pedal and the gas pedal will win.

The brake pedal and accelerator are too close together and almost the same height. So, if your foot is on the right side of the brake pedal, it is very easy to also depress the accelerator at the same time. Several times while approaching a stop sign or red light, I depressed both the accelerator and the brake pedal at the same time. It felt as if the accelerator had stuck.

Consumer believed that the two pedals are too close and the brake pedal does not sit high enough, this condition causes a problem when applying the the brake--also applied the accelerator pedal at same time. Dealer notified, and informed consumer that the way the vehicle was made, and nothing else could be done at this time.
