THE ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP ON MY 2003 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS FAILED WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING DOWN A MAJOR THOROUGHFARE WITH HER DISABLED ELDERLY PARENTS. THE FUEL TANK WAS FULL OF GAS. THE VEHICLE HAD 39, 527 MILES ON IT. THE COST OF REPAIR WAS $525.27. APPARENTLY THE PUMPS HAVE TO BE EXPLOSION PROOF, BECAUSE THEY SIT IN THE GAS TANKS. FROM WHAT I HAVE HEARD, THERE IS A PLASTIC PART THAT SHEARS OFF. A MECHANIC AT MERCURY TOLD ME THAT IT IS IMPORTANT NOT TO LET THE FUEL LEVEL DROP BELOW ONE QUARTER OF A TANK. I HAVE HEARD THAT IF THE GAS GETS TOO LOW IN THE TANK, THE PUMP BEGINS TO CAVITATE, CAUSING A STRAIN ON THE DRIVE MECHANISM. THE PUMP SHOULD HAVE BEEN DESIGNED SO THAT IT DIDN'T CAVITATE, AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE WITH BETTER PARTS.
