The code set (P0460) where the computer and the actual fuel gauge did not agree with each other on my 2003 Grand Marquis. The gauge worked perfectly and accurately. The code did not affect drivability or safety of the vehicle. It was a nuisance. The code being present would however prevent me from getting smog tested to renew my registration. I discovered and had my dealer reprogram the power train control module with the latest release. That appeared to resolve the issue.
It is obvious that there was a factory glitch in the program from day one that would surface as components age. I had to pay a full hour shop labor plus "misc" charges for something that took just minutes to do. Even though the vehicle is long out of warranty, I was not expecting a free repair but a 50/50 arrangement would have been appropriate since there was a known issue with this code being set and a TSB 05-11-3 being issued to likely resolve the issue.
