The problem is that Mercedes has placed a coffee cup holder directly on top of the GPS and control center. I had a cup of coffee in the holder with the coffee lid on. I was on a rough road and a small amount of coffee spilled out of the drinking hole and dripped into the electrical system and "fried" the boards.
Mercedes says that the part was not defective ( which I agree). The problem is that the design is defective. Liquids cannot be placed over electrical components unless the components are properly shielded which in this case they are not.
When I spoke to Mercedes national service department their answer was that they have never issue a recall for this issue. That is not an answer, all it is is a denial of there poor design. They have a nerve to ask me for $6,000 to replace the unit when there is not a 1,000 miles on the car since we purchased it.
I have been told by the head of an MB service department that they have had this happen a few times in the past (remember this sports car is not sold in large quantities). So while the national service department has denied to me that they have not experienced the problem the dealerships have.
I would say that this is a stonewalling tactic on the part of MB
