I turned on the heated seats in my car and a strange burning smell filled the car. I immediately turned them off. When I got home and took my coat off there was a large burn whole on the back of my coat. I went and checked the seats and there was a large whole burned thru the seat in the same area as my coat was.I was in motion when this happened

This smell progressively got stronger and upon inspection at the dealership it was found that the sending units attached to the fuel tanks below the rear driver's side and passenger side seats were leaking fuel through a faulty seal causing the fuel to absorb into the seat cushion. This likely created a potential fire hazard inside the cabin of the vehicle, particularly in the rear seat.

Mercedes just repaired A/C (3 visits) so turned off the A/C. next think I know smoke is coming from drivers seat, my 3yr old riding in her car seat "installed" behind me. Heater in drivers seat was burning, with the air no longer blowing, smoke was now visible. I had to cross 3 lanes of traffic to pull over. The "fire" burned a hole through the leather seat to my jeans leaving me a slight burn. Car towed to Mercedes.
