There is a recall on this problem which gives two courses of repair. First is to reprogram steering module and instrument control panel if no codes appear. The problem is codes don't appear if this only happened once or twice. Most mechanics will tell you it takes several occurrences before a code will appear. When codes show up, other repairs are needed up to and including replacing of steering column ($1204.00). Closing out of the recall can be premature if vehicle has not been driven much. So far Mazda USA has refused to give any assistance with this issue opting for the cheaper of the two options of a very serious safety issue.
