2004 Mazda 3 2.3l burns 1litre of oil every 1000kms. This car has been looked after all it's life. Regular oil changes every 5000kms with 5w20 as specified etc. Since I have personally been driving it I have put 50'000 highway kms on it this year and it has consistently burned 1itre of oil every 1000. The result of this is that my brand new iridium spark plugs have become covered in soot and I I assume the poor catalytic converter is slowly becoming clogged. There is no reason for this oil burning, all the kms are easy highway kms and has never been run hard. I'll also add that I replaced the PCV valve in hopes that would solve the problem.
There are lots of posts out there about oil burning 2.3l engines and a few on here that have experienced complete engine failure. I'm posting here in hopes Mazda will finally acknowledge the engine has an issue and be forced to do something about.
Lastly. Because of this. I will Never buy a Mazda again.
