The symptom of the problem was a coolant leak. The dealership remedy was a complete engine and turbo replacement at a cost of $12,700 (over half of the current KBB value). The dealership advised me that the problem was not uncommon and that a technical service bulletin (TSB) was issued years prior. In fact, the TSB was issued while the vehicle was still under manufacturer's warranty and during a period when it was actually in the dealership for service. Mazda did not make me (the owner) aware of the TSB or take any proactive measures to prevent the subsequent failure. I spoke with 2 local dealerships who advised me not to contact Mazda North America Customer Service because "they would not help me" and advised me to "sell the vehicle elsewhere as soon as possible" while it was still running.
For at least 3 business days I attempted to reach Mazda North America, but their call center was closed ("all associates are in meetings") and their customer contact website forms were not working. I sold the vehicle well below market value and contacted Mazda by US Mail and requested some compensation for my loss, as a result of their product defects and advice. To date, they have acknowledged the problem, but take no responsibility. I am seeking avenues to escalate the issue further or pursue litigation.
