While driving on an interstate service drive, my 2018 Mazda CX9 GT suddenly lost power and began flashing overheating warnings. I tried to move my vehicle to a safe spot while the warning and sudden loss of power was happening, which took a moment due to traffic flow and my family being in the car. I moved the car off the road, and let it cool. I slowly drove the car to a parts store to get coolant. Once the cooling system was filled, I brought the car home and began researching the problem.
According to internet threads like Reddit this is a wide spread problem happening among Mazda vehicles with several law firms researching class action lawsuits. My car is stuck at the dealership until I can find $12,000 to replace the entire engine, and sadly there are hundreds more just like me according to sites like reddit and mazda247. The cause of this according to a Mazda internal service bulletin is a poorly designed exhaust manifold that causes stress cracks on the cylinder head. Mazda then redesigned the head and manifold parts with new part numbers that mechanics should use when replacing the engine or its components. Mazda is aware of the catastrophic design flaw and is still insisting that car buyers pay over $12,000 dollars in repair cost. No exaggeration, the dealer quoted me $12k to replace the engine. There are several law firms currently investigating class action lawsuits against Mazda regarding this problem. Please be aware of this if you are driving a Mazda with the 2.5L I4 Turbo, and please go get your vehicle inspected by a dealership. Nobody told me this and I wish they would have. $12,000 is a huge amount of money, close to what I owe on the vehicle. Dealership said they would give me $1000 for the car, or I need to pay to have it fixed.
