CarComplaints.com Notes: The only area of real concern for 2011 Mazda CX-9 owners is the brake booster.
In 2014, Mazda extended the warranty on the 2007-2013 CX-9 brake booster to 7 years / 90,000 miles. However this extended warranty has expired, so buyer beware.
This Mazda CX-9 brake booster failure isn't terrible in terms of repair cost — it "only" costs $550 average to fix. However it is a safety issue when the brake booster fails as it increases stopping distance. Owners have reported having to stomp on the brake pedal, & crashes/injuries have been reported due to this CX-9 brake booster defect.

We have owned the car since 2013,having purchased it with 29,000 miles at just under 3 years old. It's been a great car other than a transfer case that went out and replaced under warranty. While driving the car started to emit a high whine. The RPM's did not increase, and the transmission was shifting fine. There were no warning lights on the dash and the temperature gauge was OK. About a mile from home, the car stalled. I checked the temp again and was OK. I thought maybe the alternator or battery was the issue. It started back up and stalled two more times before I got it home. I checked the oil and it was milky and up several inches on the dip stick. I knew the water pump failed from reading other reviews.
The maintenance to change a water pump is close to $3000, as mechanics are told they need to pull the engine. We were planning on trading in the vehicle this year. Trade in was around $6000, private party $8000 and retail close to $9500. I have read when the water pump goes, it usually destroys the engine. And if it doesn't, the engine usually only lasts a few months. Engine replacements have been quotes to many others with this problem at $11,000. For a part that should cost about $150, plus maybe a half day labor, this is unimaginable. This engine and water pump was also used in many Ford and Lincoln vehicles, and there is a class action lawsuit. I would highly suggest staying away from any Mazda or Ford vehicles with a 3.7L V6, AKA Cyclone engine.
