Transfer Case/Front Differential Leaking
2011 Mazda CX-9
This problem may be covered under warranty. Ask your Mazda dealer.
CarComplaints.com Notes: The only area of real concern for 2011 Mazda CX-9 owners is the brake booster.
In 2014, Mazda extended the warranty on the 2007-2013 CX-9 brake booster to 7 years / 90,000 miles. However this extended warranty has expired, so buyer beware.
This Mazda CX-9 brake booster failure isn't terrible in terms of repair cost — it "only" costs $550 average to fix. However it is a safety issue when the brake booster fails as it increases stopping distance. Owners have reported having to stomp on the brake pedal, & crashes/injuries have been reported due to this CX-9 brake booster defect.

The PTU (Power Transfer Unit or Transfer Case) in our CX9 started leaking black tar, just one or two drips a day near the rear of the engine. No other symptoms occurred. I took it to Mazda and they said the PTU needed to be replaced. They explained that Mazda Corporate had a warranty on the thing but that it expired about a year before. The dealership said they could still send a request for assistance from Mazda Corp and see what they said. They came back with an "offer" to cover the cost of the part and stuck us with the cost of the labor.
We ended up having to pay $600. The part fails because of a design flaw! This should have been a recall, but instead Mazda does a crap partial warranty that most CX9s won't qualify for and then sticks us with the cost to repair it. I will never buy another Mazda and will tell everyone I care about to avoid them like the plague. They seem nice new, but they won't last.
Side note: the "Brake Booster" is the exact same story on this vehicle.
