I took this in to Mazda today (2700 miles on it) and said surely there is a recall on this lift gate opening on its own. They said no and nothing they could do about it. The problem has occurred several times. When in the garage and it opens it abuts the garage door and when the door began opening it snagged the lift gate and caused a small damage to the lift gate. We now have to turn on the lights and go behind the Mazda to make sure the lift gate is not open before opening the garage door to exit. You cannot see that it is open because the clearance between the garage door and the Mazda is just inches, so the lift gate is only partially opened and resting against the garage door. It is not the fob, because we have tested it with the entrance door to the garage closed and just on the other side pushing the fob to open the lift gate. Nothing happens. So the signal does not come from the fob in the house.
So not only the problem with damage by the garage door, but also found it opened outside. Someone could easily steal it, or worse a child climb in and it closes trapping them in a hot car. Mazda needs to find out the problem and fix it as well as repair the damage to my lift gate.
